The Great Mayan Ball Game was played using a rubber ball weighing roughly 8 pounds. Players were allowed to touch the ball only with their hips and elbows. The object was to pass the ball through the large stone hoops. At Coba, only the members of the royal family watched the ball game, while the rest of the citizens waited in anticipation for the announcement that the ball had been passed through the hoop, and the gods would now grant them fertility.
Many of these large, stone tablets have been found around the grounds of Coba. It is on these tablets that the Mayans recorded information about their culture, rituals, astronomy and predictions for the future.
